Rapha x Paul Smith ‘London’ ident

While partnerships between designers and football teams take place all the time, collaborations between designers and cycling teams are far less commonplace.

Having worked extensively with Rapha in the past, Paul Smith teamed up with them again for a spot of cross-promotion. The result is a chilled little short that further convinces me of Paul Smith’s coolness. What a legend!

To Live & Ride in LA

The official trailer to the full-length feature To Live & Ride in LA has been released. Looks like quite a cross-section of different riding, and nice too see some familiar faces popping up throughout.

Rapha: Two Broad Arrows

The Rapha/Ridley Scott Associates series is blowing up in a big way, with the first short getting 23,000 views in its first 24 hours. Whether you were one of those twenty-three thousand, I’d urge you to check out the second in the series, now up on Rapha‘s homepage.

The synopsis: Former Professional Cyclist Sean Kelly (sometimes known as King Kelly) while not as much of an overt focus in this film as Museeuw in the first was definitely an inspiration. The Country Jersey in the blue, yellow and white is styled in the colors of Kelly’s former Spanish team – KAS contains the inside story of Kelly, and the colors can be made out by a character (oddly enough is played by Ultan Coyle – Rapha’s printed materials designer) who appears in ghostly fashion late in the film.

Macaframa: Jason Clary in the Panhandle

This edit of Jason Clary taking a burn round the Panhandle in San Francisco appeared on the Macaframa blog yesterday.

It’s pretty mellow by Clary standards, but has the nice cinematography and signature bohemian soundtrack you’d expect from the Macaframa crew.

Murder of Couriers

I’m fascinated by the courier subculture – partly because of their role in the fixed gear revival and partly because they take pains to portray themselves as total badasses. Case in point:

Yup, definitely a “fringe” element going on there.

Murder of Couriers documents Vancouver’s courier culture. I’m pretty excited to see the full film, which premiers in Spring 2010 (that’s “Fall” in north America).

Zlog: Future Tense Summer 2010

Loads of rad stuff going down in this month’s Future Tense edit. Check it.

I like how the event blends progressive fixed freestyle trick comps with the more “traditional” fixed gear comps like races and flatland. I don’t know about you but I’m PSYCHED! Now that the weather’s getting warmer, we need to do something like this in Cape Town.

Rapha “Throw of the Dice” NOW SCREENING

The first movie in the Ridley Scott Associates x Rapha series is now screening. Check it out by clicking the pic.

About the movie:

Historically, ‘The Hell of the North’ was not referring to the sheer pain and torment the cyclists of the Paris-Roubaix must endure to complete the 275km race. It was a newspaper caption describing the landscape when the race was resumed after WW1 – charred forests, open sewers – a completely decimated and blackened horizon.

Run your fingers through the topsoil in that region of Northern France and you are likely to find shrapnel and splintered bones. The race has been shaped by history, and as I discovered so too was Johan Museeuw’s brush with fate in the Forest of Arenberg.

The only way to define Museeuw’s true ‘North’ was to meet him in the ancient forest. From there the trajectory of the back story was formed, and thus began the filming process.

Rapha x Ridley Scott Associates

You may have noticed the site’s been down for the past week or so. Predictably, a ton of ridiculously cool stuff dropped during that time. This collaboration between Rapha and Ridley Scott Associates is just one of them. Here’s what Rapha had to say:

The inspiration for Rapha products often comes from the places, riders and stories of road racing. Our 2010 Club Jerseys were inspired by Johan Museeuw, Sean Kelly and Dario Pegoretti. To further celebrate these colourful characters Rapha commissioned three short films. The Rapha story labels were the inspiration, but the directors were given free reign to interpret them as they pleased.

Renowned film directors Nick Livesey and Adrian Moat took up the challenge, along with photographer and long time Rapha collaborator Ben Ingham. The resulting films are a delight, exploring passion, craftsmanship and the psychology of racing and getting right to the heart of the sport we love.

The movies will be screened over the next three consecutive weeks. In the meantime, click the pictures to watch the trailers.
