If you haven’t caught wind of it already, PUMA are hosting a pop-up afterhours club in Cape Town next month. The concept pays homage to the “after hours sports”, namely pool, ping pong, darts, foosball, karaoke and bowling.

We’ll meet at & Union for a beer and pulled pork sandwich at 7.30pm, after which we’ll take a leisurely roll through town and surrounds before heading back up to 120 Buitengracht, where the Social Club is at. (Ian – ping pong annihilation is coming your way!)

To coincide with the opening  on Thursday 2 December, Fixed Gear Cape Town will be hosting a super chill bike ride through town. ALL BICYCLES ARE WELCOME, so please come and say hi. More Photos

If you’ve ever hung out with Savage, you know that his name describes his riding style too. Case in point: at last month’s Critical Mass, he was sporting this set of bike-inflicted bike marks. Gnar.

Golden Arrow hit and run

By Mettie October 28th, 2010 Permalink

If you follow the FGCT Twitter feed you’ll probably know that I was hit by a Golden Arrow bus en route to work yesterday morning. I got off with an impressive collection of roasties but unfortunately my bike wasn’t so lucky.

Enlarge the pic and you’ll see that the back wheel is completely busted, the seatstays are bent and there’s a dent in the top tube where my handlebars whipped round. Because of the structural damage to the frame, it’s unlikely that I’ll be able to ride it again. *Gutted*

I was hit from behind, so don’t recall anything other than being flung off my bike and somersaulting along the road. (Re-living that experience sends shivers down my spine.) A number of people who saw the accident said that the driver was speeding down Victoria Road and ran straight into the back of me. She slowed down, then sped off once she saw me scramble to my feet.

Instinctively, I memorised the number plate of the bus: CA 132 095. Several witnesses confirmed got the same number, but Golden Arrow are denying having a bus with that license plate number in their fleet.

There’s more than just a bike at stake here. The driver of the bus needs to be identified and made sure she’s not allowed back on the road anytime soon.

Ride safe out there.

UPDATE: In the past couple of hours, Golden Arrow has identified the driver of CA 132 025. (I mistook the ’2′ for a ’9′.) She’s been suspended pending an official investigation into her reckless and negligent driving, which is (quite rightly) a dismissable offense. What’s more, a Crimewatch CCTV camera positioned opposite Gympie Street may have recorded the hit and run, which will help my case even more.

Table Mountain, 8am

By Mettie October 19th, 2010 Permalink

Spring at last. Taking advantage of the good light and mild weather, Dave, Emil and myself decided to go for a pre-breakfast roll along Table Mountain road.

At 8am, the road was almost deserted. But the moment we stopped for a water break, we were set upon by swarms of miggies. Dave inhaled hundreds of the buggers to get this shot.

Emil’s new 70s-inspired frames acted as an insect repellent.

While we were chilling out, this little fella stopped to say hello. *CUTE ATTACK*

Due to rock falls, a significant portion of the Table Mountain road is closed to cars. This empty, winding road is loads of fun to ride.

Now that the ‘dale is running 48×18, wheelies are a cinch.

And so is bombing hills! I was seriously living out my MASH fantasies going down towards Kloof Nek.

**We’re planning a post-work evening ride in the near future. Check out the FGCT Twitter @fixedgear_ct for more details**
